Global companies come together in Adelaide for trusted data forum

19 Oct 2023
In the first of a series of events, the Trusted Data Forum hosted by Invest SA, will discuss the importance of community values and ethics in shaping innovation partnerships as the world accelerates into a transformative era.

The Forum will feature representatives from world-leading companies including Amazon Web Services, Cognizant, Verida and Bellberry Ltd. Representatives from Blockchain Australia, the University of Adelaide, the University of South Australia and the South Australian Government will also contribute.

Discussions will explore the potential for critical technology innovation to combat global community issues such as climate change and improving population health.

As a pioneer in critical technology research, including artificial intelligence (AI), South Australian innovation is helping the local and global community.

Locally, innovative company, Life Whisperer, is improving in vitro fertilisation (IVF) outcomes for women globally. The Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Ethics Fellowship Program includes a focus on better treatments for painful, inflamed joints and earlier detection of debilitating respiratory conditions.

It is this innovation and critical technology research, that the Trusted Data Forum will build upon by bringing together global experts to discuss the importance of critical technology innovation being shaped by community values and ethics, with a focus on community benefit.

“As governments and industry seek technology innovation and the introduction of new services to our communities, it is essential that we collect, interpret, share and consume data in a trusted, ethical and sustainable way,” said Rob Marchiori, Australia Country Manager, Cognizant.

“Cognizant, as a global leader in data, AI and digital is proud to be part of the Trusted Data Forum and recognises the importance of safeguarding data that can drive solutions to the biggest challenges of today.”

Over the last few years, South Australia has attracted significant investment from the world’s leading technology companies.

With more than 8,000 jobs announced, organisations like Amazon Web Services, Accenture, Deloitte and The Commonwealth Bank, have all established innovation hubs in Adelaide.

This investment has been built around South Australia’s research strengths in critical technologies, which includes artificial intelligence, augmented reality, quantum, web3, cyber security and genomics.

South Australia has an excellent opportunity to build upon these strengths by accelerating innovation that delivers both significant value and community benefit. Artificial intelligence alone, is expected to contribute AUD $22 trillion to the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030.

At the heart of potential ground-breaking innovation lies a crucial element – data. As an example, ChatGPT4 relies on 1.76 trillion data points.

Embracing critical technology innovation requires collaborative partnerships that include a framework for how data privacy is protected. The required partnerships between government, research institutions and industry organisations will depend on community trust and must be guided by community benefit rather than industry profit.

Panel discussions will provide attendees with access to some of the brightest minds in ethics, the responsible use of critical technology and global challenges.

South Australia’s position as a stable and secure partner of choice in an increasingly insecure world is a strategic priority for the South Australian Government. The Forum will build on the state’s global reputation for having a stable government and trusted legal system, with a focus on how a community values-based approach to critical technology innovation can strengthen access to investment and export markets, while combating community challenges such as climate change and growing health concerns.

Guest speakers will give their insights on how a trusted data framework can be applied to solve critical problems being faced by the community now, and in the future.

Keynote speakers will include:

· Trina O’Donnell – Director of Strategic Projects at Bellberry Ltd – Shaping Health Research Ethics: Discover how societal values shape health research ethics and the governance principles that can be applied for the responsible and ethical application of critical technology.

· Nick Lothian – Product Manager at Verida – Tokenisation for Healthcare: The potential for better population health outcomes.

· Nick Woodward – Head of Developer Relations Hedera: Trust as the Cornerstone: A foundation to combat climate change.
