Our state is a national leader in foundational Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and application. This is driven by major investments in the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) and the Responsible AI Research Centre (RAIR), as well as the establishment of the Office for Artificial Intelligence with a Minister for AI, Australia’s first government office dedicated to unlocking the potential of AI. 

With a focus on turning research into practical applications in defence, space, medicine, and industry, the state is the national hub of the advanced AI ecosystem.

South Australia is building critical mass in frontier technologies, supported by deep research capability and strong industry demand across sectors such as defence, health, energy, mineral exploration and space. 

The state is home to a growing cohort of around 50 photonics and quantum businesses, advancing technologies in areas including secure communications, sensing, renewable energy and medical innovation. With clear pathways from research to commercial deployment, South Australia is enabling the practical application of emerging technologies at scale. 

South Australia is the nation’s Defence State, with a strong and growing cyber security industrial base that is fundamental to the nation’s strategic priorities and a key economic pillar for the state. The state is home to over 50 specialist cyber security companies supporting some of Australia’s largest defence contracts, and it hosts a state-of-the-art commercial cyber range for project collaboration. 

The South Australian Government’s strategy aims to continue developing the state as Australia’s cyber security hub by fostering collaboration between industry and academia, as well as the state’s critical role in the defence ecosystem. The state’s priorities focus on increasing investments in secure platforms and education to attract and retain a skilled cyber workforce, supporting the maturity and complexity of the digital economy.

Long-term investments in cyber skills, training, and talent development make cyber security a driver of investment and Adelaide a strategic destination for sovereign projects. Cyber security is a central capability in Australia’s AUKUS Pillar II commitments, placing SA at the centre of trilateral cooperation with the US and UK.

South Australia has a sophisticated hi-tech ecosystem and a flourishing suite of research institutions delivering research partnerships and integration into strategic industry sectors such as defence, space, renewable energy, food, agribusiness, health and medicine. 

This includes the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), the Centre for Augmented Reasoning and the Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments (IVE). IVE is a world leader in augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) offering a unique combination of computer science, engineering, art, architecture and design. 

The National Space Agency, based at innovation precinct Lot Fourteen, provides opportunities in software, cyber security and artificial intelligence. 

One of the largest biomedical precincts in the Southern Hemisphere, Adelaide BioMed City, provides world-class medical technology and extensive opportunities for clinical trials.
