SOHN

Sohn Hearts and Minds, Adelaide 2024

South Australia was proud to host Sohn Hearts and Minds in 2024. Our state’s collaborative ecosystem, encompassing industry, academia, and government, were on show throughout the conference with key sectors brought to life in the foyer. Invest SA, a dedicated team of investment and business professionals within the Department of State Development, chatted with guests during the event and are happy to engage in any follow up conversations for anyone who joined in person or online.

ASPARAGOPSIS SEAWEED – METHANE TAMER FOR FEEDLOTS

Making lower-methane animal products a reality. Methane Tamer is a line of animal feed supplement formulation based on whole Asparagopsis seaweed, which is the most effective natural substance for reducing enteric methane. In fact, Methane Tamer Beef Feedlot is designed to deliver a minimum 70% reduction in enteric emissions throughout its shelf life.

When comparing Methane Tamer™ and control cattle, meat received consistent scores across all MLA quality metrics.

There have also been significant benefits to the cattle fed Methane Tamer™, as they’ve achieved the same weight gain as the control group while consuming less feed per day, representing an improvement in feed conversion efficiency of a few per cent over a 100-day period.

TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY SURGICAL TRAINING MODEL

Knee arthroplasty technique is constantly evolving and the opportunity for surgeons to practice new techniques is currently highly dependent on the availability of cadaveric specimens requiring certified facilities. The high cost, limited supply, and heterogeneity of cadaveric specimens has increased the demand for synthetic training models, which are currently limited by a lack of biomechanical fidelity.

Fusetec aim to design, manufacture, and experimentally validate a synthetic knee surgical training model which reproduces the flexion dependent varus‐valgus (VV) and anterior‐posterior (AP) mechanics of cadaveric knees, while maintaining anatomic accuracy.

A probabilistic finite element modelling approach was employed to design physical models to exhibit passive cadaveric VV and AP mechanics. Seven synthetic models were manufactured and tested in a six‐degree‐of‐freedom hexapod robot. Overall, the synthetic models exhibited cadaver‐like VV and AP mechanics across a wide range of flexion angles with little variation between models.

WHYALLA HYDROGEN POWER PLANT MODEL

South Australia’s Hydrogen Jobs Plan will deliver a world-leading hydrogen facility featuring 250MWe of hydrogen production, 200MW of power generation, and hydrogen storage.

This facility will utilise South Australia’s excess renewable energy from existing wind and solar farms to produce renewable hydrogen, stabilising the grid during periods of high renewable energy penetration. The stored hydrogen will be used for power generation at the facility, returning renewable energy to the grid and providing essential firming services for the state when needed.

This initiative will support South Australia’s goal of achieving 100% net renewable energy generation by 2027. Additionally, renewable hydrogen will be made available to help decarbonise heavy industry and support the Government of South Australia’s green iron and steel strategy.

ZERO® - FUEL REINVENTED™️

Zero Petroleum (“Zero”) is a breakthrough energy company that develops and manufactures whole-blend synthetic, non-biological fuels – gasoline, diesel and jet fuel – in a completely fossil-free process, using just carbon dioxide from the air and hydrogen from water. Zero’s proprietary DirectFT® fuel synthesis process has demonstrated industry-leading fuel quality and production efficiency.

Synthetic fuels (e-fuels, electro fuels, PtL, eSAF) are fully sustainable and circular in material, they retain the critical energy density of liquid fuels, and they can be manufactured at unlimited scale, therefore providing the only solution to the total de-fossilisation of the majority of transport sectors including aviation, heavy transport, marine and agriculture.

Founded by Formula 1® legend Paddy Lowe, Zero recently opened the world’s first fully featured synthetic fuel plant (Plant Zero.1) near Oxford, UK and has plans to build a commercial-scale plant which is to begin production in 2026.”
